In the news lately there has been a great deal of press about the “broken bail system” in Philadelphia, PA. In fact, the system is broken to the tune of $1 billion! OUCH! What makes this number so high? Apparently, this number is off the charts because of close to 50,000 long-term bench warrants for offenders that “skipped bail”, uncollected forfeited bail bonds, witness threats, and failure of the criminal justice system to enforce accountability for criminal offenders. The Houston Chronicle recently reported that hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants have paid $977 million in bail bonds to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over the past six years – allowing them to go free until their deportation cases are decided.

The money reflects a roughly threefold increase in the number of people granted bond since 2006, enabling at least 209,163 potential deportees to avoid detention and go on with their lives as they await their legal fate, according to ICE data obtained by the Houston Chronicle. [Read more →]

A convicted Texas felon accused earlier this year of impersonating a police officer now faces more charges after investigators learned he was employed as a bail bondsman, with no license or certification, and had apprehended at least three fugitives, according to court documents.

Randy Lee Nolen, 43, of Hutto, currently jailed in Williamson County, now faces charges in Travis County, including carrying a prohibited item in a courthouse, unauthorized contacts with a bail bond surety and violating state arrest warrant execution laws. [Read more →]

A Madison, Wisconsin father and his wife are accused of starving his 15-year-old daughter for years. The couple has been in jail since February because their bail is $22,500 and $30,000. Their attorneys believe those bonds are too high because they don’t pose a flight risk. Plus, the father requested that he be excused from all future court proceedings with no explanation.
